Imagine floating above Earth, witnessing the dance of the auroras, the majesty of thunderstorms, and the vast silence of space—all from the comfort of your home. That’s the magic brought to life by the National Geographic Channel’s VR educational video for the series 'One Strange Rock'.
Led by Matthew Zymet and developed with HumanEyes Technologies, this project used immersive virtual reality to record life aboard the ISS and the view of our planet from space. Shot during Expeditions 53 through 56, the footage was designed to deepen public understanding of Earth’s interconnected systems and inspire awe for our home planet.
Virtual reality added a new dimension to science communication. Viewers could step into the boots of astronauts and experience the day-to-day of space life, enhancing STEM education in classrooms and homes alike. The project demonstrated how space-based content can be used for powerful storytelling and educational outreach.
This initiative highlighted the ISS as more than a research station—it's a platform for cultural exchange and inspiration. Through VR, it made the inaccessible accessible, connecting humanity to the cosmos in a deeply personal way.
