Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #31858: Understanding the Phospho-aging Mechanism of Accelerated Aging in Microgravity

The study of aging is an important area of research, especially in space, where microgravity may accelerate the aging process. One such investigation, the 'Phospho-aging Mechanism of Accelerated Aging Under Microgravity,' is led by Makoto Kuro-o, M.D., Ph.D., from Jichi Medical University. This research examines how microgravity affects cellular aging, an area critical for long-term space missions, where astronauts could face accelerated physiological decline due to exposure to space environments. The research aims to identify molecular markers of aging and potentially develop methods to mitigate age-related health risks during extended space travel.


In microgravity, the body undergoes various changes, including muscle atrophy, bone density loss, and altered immune responses. However, little is known about how microgravity affects the aging process at the molecular level. This experiment seeks to uncover the phospho-aging mechanisms in human cells, particularly those involved in aging-related diseases. By understanding these mechanisms, scientists can develop strategies to reduce age-related health issues for astronauts and improve health outcomes for people on Earth.


The study is conducted with the support of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and it is part of a broader human research category aimed at understanding the impact of space travel on human physiology. The experiment takes place aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where Kuro-o’s team utilizes space to examine the biological changes that occur in response to the unique environment of space. The results of this study could not only enhance the safety and health of astronauts but also lead to advancements in age-related disease treatments on Earth.
