The Swinburne Youth Space Innovation Challenge 2022 presented an exciting opportunity to investigate the growth of microgreens in microgravity. Led by Dr. Rebecca Allen from Swinburne University of Technology and Ms. Olivia Holzhaus from Rhodium Scientific, this experiment was conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during Expedition 69. The study focused on examining how microgreens, such as radishes and lettuce, can grow in a space environment and what factors influence their growth and nutritional value in microgravity.
Microgreens are an ideal candidate for space farming because they are rich in nutrients and can grow quickly. The goal of this experiment was to better understand the challenges and possibilities of growing food in space, particularly for long-duration missions where traditional food sources are limited. By growing nutritious microgreens aboard the ISS, this research is helping to determine how space farming can contribute to sustainable food production on future space missions.
In microgravity, plants face unique challenges. Without gravity, plants must rely on other environmental cues, such as light and water distribution, to orient their growth.
