In space, sleep quality directly impacts performance, mood, and health. But traditional sleep studies often involve cumbersome wires and sensors. The Sonokard experiment from ROSCOSMOS introduced a game-changing, non-contact method to monitor astronauts’ physiological functions during sleep over long missions.
Led by Dr. Irina Funtova, this study took place over multiple expeditions (16 through 34). Using ultrasonic sensors integrated into bedding, Sonokard measured respiratory rate, heart rate, and movement without disturbing the sleeper. This approach allowed scientists to continuously assess sleep quality without the discomfort of conventional equipment.
Understanding sleep in space is crucial because microgravity alters circadian rhythms, leading to fatigue, reduced concentration, and even immune suppression. Sonokard’s data helps identify sleep disorders early and informs interventions like lighting adjustments, schedule changes, and pharmacological support.
Non-contact monitoring may also benefit healthcare on Earth, especially for elderly or critically ill patients who cannot tolerate traditional monitoring equipment. The Sonokard technology represents a step toward smarter, more humane health monitoring systems.
