Space BD’s Space Delivery Project 2 marks an inspiring leap into hands-on space education. This initiative, led by Genki Hiraga and supported by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), aims to kindle curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of space through tangible, engaging experiences. Designed for Expedition 68, the project transported educational and cultural items from Earth to the International Space Station (ISS), giving students and participants a chance to see their ideas soar into orbit.
At its core, the project allows educational institutions and other groups to send items into space—anything from school mascots to science experiments. These objects are later returned to Earth, bringing back not just physical artifacts but also the rich experiences and stories tied to their journey. The significance is profound: students see their contributions make a literal space voyage, making science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning more real and impactful.
Beyond the logistics, Space BD collaborates closely with participants throughout the design, development, and post-return storytelling phases. This close mentorship transforms a project into an immersive STEM education opportunity. The project not only deepens students’ appreciation for space science but also motivates them to consider careers in the sector.
As interest in space continues to grow, projects like these are vital. They bring space closer to the public, especially young minds, and inspire future generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers.
