Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32253: Growing Arabidopsis in Space: How Plants Teach Us About Life Beyond Earth

Arabidopsis, a small flowering plant that’s often called the 'lab rat' of the plant world, became a space pioneer aboard the International Space Station during Expeditions 49/50. This experiment wasn’t just about growing plants—it was about using education and hands-on scientific engagement to inspire the next generation of scientists and explorers. Led by Principal Investigator Ted Tagami and developed by Space Tango, Inc., the project explored how Arabidopsis adapts to microgravity. Students and educators followed the experiment from Earth, learning how plant biology changes in orbit. By comparing Earth-based and space-grown plants, scientists can learn how gravity—or the lack of it—affects root development, growth patterns, and even genetic expression. These findings are crucial for future long-term space missions where growing food sustainably will be essential. The Arabidopsis project wasn’t just a botany experiment; it was a bridge between classrooms on Earth and the science labs of the ISS, nurturing curiosity and discovery in students worldwide.
