Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32293: Can Sharkskin-Inspired Surfaces Block E. coli in Space?

The Space Tango-VCHS experiment focuses on the innovative use of biomimicry in space. By emulating shark skin’s unique texture known as the 'Sharklet' pattern, Valley Christian High School students aim to assess its antibacterial properties in the microgravity environment of the ISS. On Earth, this material has proven effective at discouraging bacterial colonization, but how does it fare in space, where fluids behave differently and bacteria can act unpredictably? The project tests whether E. coli growth is inhibited on this surface, providing insight into potential applications for spacecraft hygiene, medical equipment, and future space habitats. The experiment not only furthers our understanding of bacterial behavior in space but also empowers student researchers in real-world science.
