Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32297: Volcanic Algae in Orbit: How Extremophiles Survive Space

ICE Cubes #24 investigates volcanic algae—microorganisms adapted to extreme environments—by sending them into the equally harsh realm of space. Conducted by Extremo Technologies and supported by ESA, the project seeks to understand how these extremophiles respond to microgravity and cosmic radiation. Volcanic algae thrive in hot, acidic springs on Earth, making them ideal candidates for bio-experiments in orbit. Their resilience could inspire innovations in biotechnology, bioremediation, or even Martian colonization strategies. Studying how life persists in space helps scientists redefine biological limits and paves the way for sustainable life-support systems in off-world habitats.
