Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32326: Zero Robotics: Coding Competitions in Space

What if students on Earth could write code that runs on satellites in space? That’s exactly what the Zero Robotics experiment enables. This innovative educational initiative invites high school students to develop software for SPHERES (Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites) aboard the International Space Station (ISS), allowing them to directly engage with real space operations.


Zero Robotics is a collaborative effort led by MIT, NASA, and several private and educational organizations. It transforms space into a classroom where students compete by programming SPHERES satellites to perform tasks like docking, navigation, or object avoidance—all in a zero-gravity environment.


The competition is designed to be both educational and inspiring. Students start with a simulation environment on Earth, where they develop algorithms and test their strategies. Finalists have their code uploaded to the ISS, where astronauts run the actual competition using the SPHERES satellites.
