Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32582: UBAKUSAT: Turkey’s Leap into Space with a Student-Built Satellite

UBAKUSAT is an inspirational example of how educational institutions can play a vital role in advancing space technology. Developed by students and faculty at Istanbul Technical University, UBAKUSAT is a small CubeSat that was launched to the International Space Station and then deployed into orbit to demonstrate and test communication technologies.

CubeSats are miniaturized satellites, often no bigger than a shoebox, and have opened the door to affordable space research. UBAKUSAT was equipped with amateur radio transponders and technology for space environment monitoring. Its mission included testing a digital communication system developed in Japan and measuring ionospheric conditions around Earth.

What makes UBAKUSAT remarkable is the hands-on involvement of students in the entire development process—from design and fabrication to testing and mission operations. This initiative gave young engineers and scientists a direct pathway into the space industry and provided valuable experience in systems engineering, satellite communication, and orbital operations.

Once in orbit, UBAKUSAT transmitted beacon signals that were received by amateur radio operators worldwide. It also sent telemetry data back to Earth, which students analyzed to monitor the satellite’s health and performance. This real-time interaction between the satellite and its developers fostered a deep understanding of satellite behavior in space.

UBAKUSAT serves as a model for how educational programs can contribute to space exploration. It demonstrates that with the right support and mentorship, students can achieve extraordinary things—even sending a satellite into space.
