Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32606: Tracking Earth’s Health from Orbit: The Uragan-Okruzhayuschaya Sreda Mission

The name 'Okruzhayuschaya Sreda' translates to 'environment' in Russian, which perfectly captures the essence of this Uragan series experiment. Conducted from the International Space Station, this mission focused on broad environmental monitoring to understand how ecosystems are changing under pressure from both natural forces and human activity.

Run by the Russian Academy of Sciences under the leadership of Lev Desinov, the experiment used satellite images to monitor forests, coastlines, agricultural lands, and industrial zones. Changes in vegetation cover, land use, and water bodies were tracked to understand long-term trends.

The advantage of conducting such monitoring from space lies in consistency and scale. Earth’s surface is vast, and many environmental changes are subtle and slow. The ISS’s orbit allows repeated, regular observations of the same locations, creating a time-lapse view of ecological shifts.

From helping track desertification in arid regions to identifying illegal logging, Uragan-Okruzhayuschaya Sreda turned astronauts into environmental sentinels. The project also shared data with local authorities, environmental agencies, and educational programs, amplifying its reach.

This experiment highlighted that the fight to protect the environment can benefit immensely from tools in space. It served as a case study in how Earth observation satellites can inform sustainable practices.
