Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32615: Health Check from Space: Simplifying Urinalysis on the ISS

Health monitoring is vital during space missions, and one of the most basic diagnostic tools is urinalysis. The 'Urinalysis in Space' experiment, led by Dr. Jonah Mink and developed by Healthy.io, aims to streamline this process using smartphone-compatible tools that don’t require bulky equipment or lab facilities.

In microgravity, standard urine tests are more complicated. There’s limited space, and handling fluids is tricky. This study evaluates the feasibility of using a mobile app and smartphone camera to analyze urine samples. Astronauts take a picture of a dipstick and the app provides results instantly—testing for glucose, protein, ketones, and other key biomarkers.

The goal is to create an easy, reliable method for health diagnostics in space. Beyond that, the technology has great potential for use in remote or underserved areas on Earth where access to labs is limited. With accurate and fast results, patients and clinicians can make informed decisions quickly.

The experiment represents a step forward in personalized, portable healthcare and supports the long-term goal of sustainable human presence in space.
