Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #32670: Student-built Satellite Takes to the Stars: WASEDA SAT-3

WASEDA SAT-3 is a shining example of student-led innovation in space technology. Designed and built by Waseda University in Tokyo, this small satellite was part of Expedition 49/50 and supported by JAXA. It was developed to demonstrate the use of new materials and structural designs in small satellite construction.

The goal was to evaluate how these new technologies perform in the space environment, especially when exposed to microgravity and radiation. The satellite also included educational tools and was used as a platform for hands-on learning for university students.

Through this project, students gained real-world experience in satellite design, testing, deployment, and operations—skills that are vital for Japan’s growing space industry. WASEDA SAT-3 showed that small satellites can be highly capable and cost-effective tools for technology testing.

It also fostered a culture of innovation and collaboration, proving that academic institutions can play a significant role in advancing space exploration.
